Travel – Getting to Dortmund

International guests arriving by plane:

We recommend that you look at flight options not only to/from Dortmund, which has a small airport with connections (e.g. from/to London), but also to/from Düsseldorf, which is a convenient one-hour train ride away from Dortmund/ TU Dortmund University and has good international flight connections.

Since the workshop will begin with lunch/snacks around noon/1pm on Friday, 22 June, flights that arrive in Dortmund or Düsseldorf at 10 am (or earlier) on Friday should leave enough time for you to make your way to the university.

The workshop will run until approx. 5.30 pm on Saturday, 23 June, thus flights that depart after 8/ 8.30 pm should leave enough time for you to make your way to the airport.

From the Airport to the Hotel/ Workshop Venue

Guests arriving at the airport in Düsseldorf are kindly advised to follow the signs to the Sky Train, which connects the Airport Arrivals/Departures to the Airport Railway Station ("D-Flughafen Bahnhof") (http://www.duesseldorf-international.de/dus_en/b_skytrain).

There is a regular service of three regional express trains (RE1, RE3, RE6) and one regional train (S-Bahn S1) between Düsseldorf Airport Railway Station ("D-Flughafen Bahnhof") and Dortmund several times per hour. Train schedules are available here: http://www.vrr.de/de/fahrten/busundbahn/linienplaene/index.html.

Your stop will be Dortmund Hbf. (short for Hauptbahnhof, i.e. main station), when you are travelling to your hotel on the 21st. Taking one of the three RE trains is recommended, as it takes approx. 45 minutes from Düsseldorf Airport to Dortmund.

In order to get from the hotel to the university on Friday/ Saturday, you will need to take the S1 from Dortmund Hbf. to Solingen and get off at DO-Universität.

Just before you get on the Sky Train (which runs every 5 to 10 mins), there is a ticket machine where you will have the chance to buy a ticket (Zone D - adult, about 12 EUR) for the ride from Düsseldorf to Dortmund.

A quota of rooms for workshop participants have been pre-reserved for the night of June 22, 2012 at the Mercure Hotel Dortmund City.

In order to make your reservation, contact the Mercure Hotel Dortmund directly and mention that you are a participant of the “TU English Workshop” and would like to reserve the discount room rate. (Note that pre-reservations will be cancelled on 9 May, 2012, so we recommend that you make your booking before then.)
