Welcome to English Linguistics at TU Dortmund University!

Language is central to humanity and human culture. Our ability to communicate, our ability to organize our ideas, our basic thinking is based on language. In English linguistics, we systematically study and analyze the nature, structure and change of human language(s) drawing on methods and knowledge from a wide range of disciplines. With a particular emphasis on the English language, we study how we produce and perceive sounds (phonetics and phonology), how words and sentences are formed (morphology, syntax), how meaning is expressed (semantics, pragmatics), how language interplays with society and identity (sociolinguistics), how it develops over time (historical linguistics) as well as how languages are acquired and how they can interact with each other, amongst others.  At the chairs of English linguistics at TU Dortmund University, we have a particular research focus on multilingualism, pragmatics, language acquisition as well as World Englishes and language in the media. In the first years of study, you will be mainly introduced to the core disciplines of linguistics. Your knowledge will be further deepened and expanded in the advanced modules thereafter. As we follow an applied approach to teaching and learning, you will practice scientific methods yourselves throughout your studies.
