Forschungsprofil Research profile

Research in English Linguistics in Dortmund focuses on different aspects of language variation, language change and language in society. We are interested in how language in general, and the English language in particular, adapts to particular social, societal or semantic and pragmatic contexts.

Language change and language adaptations take place at all stages of language use and development. They may be triggered by multilinguality and by cultural contacts, by contacts between language users with differing communicative intentions, by different power structures, and by the use of changing communication media.

Our researchers and teachers are particularly interested in (in alphabetical order):

  • Cognitive approaches to semantics
  • Language attitudes
  • Languages of Britain and Ireland
  • Language variation and change
  • Multilinguality
  • Syntax and morphosyntax

We particularly use corpus-linguistic, cognitive, sociolinguistic and formal approaches to the research in these areas.
