Requirement and standards

At the beginning of your studies we expect you already to have achieved a level of proficiency in English roughly equivalent to C1, as defined by the Common Reference Framework developed by the Council of Europe.  By the time you leave us, you ought to have achieved at least the “Mastery” associated with level C2. Prospective students need to demonstrate to us that they have attained this level of proficiency before they can be admitted. Details of how to do this are available here.

The courses and support we offer in Sprachpraxis to help students along this path are organised around five “pillars” contained in two modules:

Basismodul

Under the BML regulations, this is Module 4 (English Language Skills). Each module component is graded separately to create a composite grade for the module. There is no Modulprüfung.

Typically, students complete the IFC (Integrated Foundation Course) in their first semester and then take a WOC (Written and Oral Communication). Students should start planning the Stay Abroad as soon as possible, but we appreciate that in some cases it may not be convenient to complete the stay abroad until later in the course.

Aufbaumodul

Under the BML regulations, this is Module 10 (English Language Skills). Each module component is graded separately to create a composite grade for the module. There is no Modulprüfung.

For this module we offer two types of courses which are particularly challenging and relevant at this level: Translation German/English and Academic Writing.
