The ability to write effectively in English in an academic context is vital right across the curriculum, no matter whether you are writing on literature, cultural studies, on language learning and teaching, or on linguistics. This is why we regard Academic Writing as one of the pillars of language teaching in the Department. Building on the work done in WOCs, these courses aim at developing the understanding and writing of academic English and guide students through the processes of text analysis, evaluation, drafting and editing. Classroom work focuses on identifying features of language at different levels of textual design and showing how vocabulary and grammar relate to the rhetorical function and context of communication. Students are expected to submit work on a regular basis, some of which forms the basis for the course grade.
